The Mudbirds: Slick Blues

‘Slick Blues’ is a misleading title. The Mudbirds from Oude Bildtzijl don’t play any run of the mill blues, but are cleverly inspired by pre-war acoustic blues. They then add their own personal colours: Rene Tweehuysen excels on the dobro and ‘lap steel guitar’. Alan Laws is an expressive harmonica player and although we might expect more from the vocals you can’t really complain about that, his accent being preferable to almost any other Dutch blues vocalist. There are a few really good own compositions, the others are better know covers. But the choice is far from predictable. Note ‘Whipping Post’ actually from southern rock band The Allman Brothers. The Indian like ‘drone’ at the start of  ‘Heaven’ is an unexpected, noticeable trait. A beautiful album from an interesting blues duo -J.H.

'Slick Blues' is een misleidende titel. The Mudbirds uit Oudebildtzijl maken geen dertien-in-een-dozijn-houthakkersblues, maar laten zich slim inspireren door de vooroorlogse akoestische blues. Daar voegen ze de nodige eigenzinnige kleuren aan toe: zo schittert René Tweehuysen op dobro en 'lap steel guitar'. Alan Laws, uit Engeland inderdaad, is een expressieve mondharmonicaspeler en een niet al te opmerkelijke zanger, maar dat mag met deze aanpak amper een bezwaar heten. En qua accent onderscheidt hij zich in gunstige zin van vrijwel alle Nederlandse blueszangers. Een paar alleraardigste Liedjes komen uit de eigen pen, de meeste andere uit de oude doos. Maar voor de hand liggend is die keus allerminst: zie 'Whipping Post', eigenlijk van southern rockband Allman Brothers. De Indiaas getinte 'drone' aan het begin van 'Heaven' is nog zo'n onverwacht, prikkelend trekje. Mooie plaat van een interessant bluesduo. -J.H.
